Meaning of Orissa Bela: 

Meaning of 'Orissa'

Orissa, an eastern coastal state in India originally called Utkal, means "The Land of Shakti" in its native language of Oriya ('Shakti' means inner strength and is the feminine form of the Shivalinga or 'Kalinga'). 

The Story

Orissa is one of the few states in India 's ten-thousand year old history created out of peace and not from war.  The end of the Kalinga Dynasty was marked when the Kalinga King was defeated by King Ashoka, the grandson of Chandragupta Maurya. After centuries of battle, King Ashoka became filled with remorse and sorrow. Saddened by his inner conflicts, he renounced the war by embracing Buddhism, a path of peace and non-violence. King Ashoka, with his new beliefs, ended the war by sending out missionaries rather than soldiers, conquering the people's hearts and not their villages. By the 7^th century, the Kalinga Empire disintegrated and Orissa was decided as the new name of the mystical hilly land and launched the beginning of the Orissan Dynasty.

Later, Orissa also became known as the "Land of Magnificent Temples".  These Orissan temples were centers of art, tribal music, handicrafts and the origin of Odissi Dance. Originally performed as a sacred ritual dedicated to the Gods, Odissi is marked by sensuousness and lyricism, soft, graceful and flowing movements that reflect the divine sculptural motifs of the temples of Orissa.

Meaning of 'Bela'
 

Bela has several meanings throughout the world. In Gujarati and Hindi, it means "A Moment in Time". In Hebrew, it means "Devoted to God". In Spanish and Italian, it means "Beautiful". And in Hungarian, it means "Intelligent".
